| Rancho Mirage
Nicknamed the “playground of the Presidents,” Rancho Mirage,
a community of country club homes and fairway condominiums is
known for its famous medical facilities.
The city is home to the world’s most famous alcohol and drug
clinic, the Betty Ford Center in the Eisenhower Medical Center
complex. Other nationally recognized Rancho Mirage medical
facilities include the Heart Institute of the Desert and the
Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center at Eisenhower.
The city’s streets even honor the rich and famous,
celebrities who have lived here and publicly served the area,
including Dinah Shore, Frank Sinatra, Fred Waring, Bob Hope and
Gerald Ford.
Golf courses here are designed by some of the sport’s most
recognized names — Pete Dye, Arnold Palmer and Ted Robinson. The
Westin Mission Hills Resort is home to the Reed Anderson Tennis
School, one of the country’s top camps. And Rancho Mirage’s Ritz
Carlton, now The Lodge, made Condé Nast Traveler’s top five list
of U.S. mainland resorts.
Rancho Mirage got its start in 1924, when some Los Angeles
developers bought land parcels in the Coachella Valley’s
geographic center. Located between Palm Springs and Indio, the
area became attractive as a Hollywood hideaway; Greta Garbo and
Frank Morgan (the “Wizard of Oz”) bought homes here.
In the mid-1930s, the Hollywood parade continued, and after
World War II, the area’s prestigious clubs and golf courses
began drawing dignitaries, including Harry Truman. Seven
presidents would follow, playing golf and relaxing at Rancho
Mirage.
Rancho Mirage’s economy centers on retail, real estate sales
and the tourism industry. Health care also provides a good
portion of the jobs. In the past few years, the city has moved
to become more business-friendly by lowering the business
license tax and changing its sign ordinance.
